If you start to hydroplane, don't stop by stamping on the brakes or clutching at the steering wheel. If you suddenly move, you'll be spinning out of your head. Rather, remove the foot from the gas pedal to allow the car to slow down gradually. Keep the steering wheel straight until the wheels re-engage the road surface.

If the engine is hydrolocked, you can usually hear the noise of water flowing through the engine. If you foolishly attempted to turn the key when you stalled in water and heard a loud metallic clunk with no sound coming from the engine, the engine is probably hydrolocked. The pistons will be stopped in front of solid liquid in the cylinders and the starter motor will be totally unable to turn the crank shaft. Avoid further turning the key as this will cause more damage to the structure.

It depends extremely on whether it was exposed to fresh water or salt water and how quickly the car was removed. In some cases, if the vehicle is removed from the flood area promptly by a flatbed tow truck, the fresh storm water can be dehumidified by using special industrial dehumidifiers. If water does get to the main Engine Control Unit (ECU) under the dash, however, it's most often the whole wiring harness that must be replaced.
