
With the crisp autumn morning air in the South, comes two things for sure: prime hunting seasons and pure trail riding conditions, but also, of course, pure trail riding conditions is that your “DIY” truck pulls will fail and your axle will be ruined. Throughout the South, from Georgia’s deep plow fields to the swampy backwoods of Mississippi, it’s a truck driver’s delight to push their rigs against the elements. However, when the tires lose traction, the spin begins and a 5,000-pound rig settles into the thick, unforgiving mud of the South, logic must take a back seat to bravado.
The first response is pretty much universal: “Don’t worry I have a friend with a bigger truck and a strap in the back.” It seems simple, economical and an old fashioned country outing. But a simple DIY extraction often results in a stinking, metallic SNAP, thousands of dollars in structural vehicle damage and a destroyed axle.
Why DIY Truck Pulls Don’t Work
When you begin to take a good look at the physics of mud, the consumer equipment available, and the mechanical weaknesses found in your 4×4’s drivetrain, you’re left with a clear understanding of why DIY truck pulls don’t work; and why 4x4 recovery by the professionals is the only safe way to get out.
Before you can see how to make a DIY pull fail, you must comprehend what you’re fighting. Depending on where you are, southern mud is not simply wet dirt, it can be dense alluvial silt, river bottom muck or the infamous red clay. Hydrostatic suction is created when a heavy truck bottoms out. As the truck drops, the mud fillers stop air from flowing under the truck’s tires, the differentials and the frame rails. A normal car just does not have that sort of kinetic shock capability, or capacity to create the shock. Moreover, southern red clay is a consistent material, which means that it behaves like concrete after it surrounds the moving parts. The wheels continue to turn and dig deeper and deeper furrows and actually form a physical barrier of earth directly ahead of the wheels.
People are not aware of the huge difference in operation between a tow strap and a recovery strap (also known as kinetic rope). Normal tow straps are constructed of polyester and are nearly non-elastic. They are specifically made to pull a moving vehicle down a flat, concrete road. If a buddy attaches a polyester tow strap to his hitch, gets a “running start” and tows you out with a powerful, instant burst of kinetic energy, he is putting massive, instant kinetic shock into both vehicles.
The Physics Behind A Disaster
The energy is not dissipated throughout the strap, which doesn’t stretch. The physics of this sudden bang is catastrophic:
The Projectile Effect: A cheap strap will never withstand its working load limit, and will snap. What happens is that when the stored energy is released, the strap (and anything attached to it) flies through the air at supersonic speed. Common consequences of a broken recovery line are broken tailgates, windshield blowouts and severe injuries to people.
In DIY situations, drivers often tie a standard tow ball on the bumper with a loop strap. These balls are not for violent kinetic yanks, but for vertical tongue weight and smooth towing forces. It’s a horrifically common occurrence for the entire tow ball to detach and become a two pound steel missile flying directly towards the truck that’s stuck.
The Horrors of Using the Wrong Method
If you are using the wrong gear, you are creating what might be a very dangerous environment. A ruptured strap can tear into body panels like a knife through butter and break window glass in seconds endangering the lives of all people around the vicinity. Structural damage to your vehicle’s drivetrain and axle occurs in moments when a DIY truck pull ends in trouble.
The most frequent and costly victim is the vehicle’s drivetrain, namely the axles and transmission. When pulling at an angle (which is almost always the case when a buddy is working on a somewhat uneven, slippery trail) the lateral forces on the stuck truck are tremendous. Axle housings are designed to take the weight of the truck and load (the vertical load) and not extreme sideways twisting. The internal gears can become misaligned by the sudden impact of a violent loading on the axle tubes and the differential teeth can get stripped, all in one hit. When these gears go out of alignment, the whole axle assembly is in the state of being destroyed.
When the pulling truck takes an aggressive approach to the extraction, through sheer force, the transmission gets the ju-ju. If a vehicle is towing a heavy load under high torque conditions, automatic transmissions quickly overheat, resulting in clutch packs getting fried. It can easily shear input shafts or even completely destroy high gear cogs in manual transmissions. The cost of having a melted transmission is usually significantly greater than the cost of a professional recovery call.
Today’s trucks have a very well engineered frame construction and have special front and rear crush zones. They are not designed to cope with a kinetic yank’s twisting stresses. A single strap attached to one side of the frame or suspension component can quickly cause the whole frame to twist out of shape. Insurers typically consider a vehicle a total loss if its frame is twisted as it cannot travel straight again without the risk of damaging further.
However, when the math, physics and the potential mechanical damage is taken into account, the “free” help of a buddy is the most costly. That’s where off-road recovery specialists enter the picture. A knowledgeable recovery operator knows how to break the hydrostatic force of the mud. A pro will often put lines up to lift the nose or back of the truck slightly while pulling so that the truck doesn’t plow itself further into the wall of mud that it has already dug. This unseals the vacuum seal without any risk of damaging the structure of the vehicle, allowing the truck to roll out smoothly.
